Skate Lessons at Hackbridge Primary School: Building Skills, Confidence, and Fun with Mister Mckenzie and Ryan

Bringing Skate Lessons to Hackbridge Primary School on London Road

For the past few weeks, the playground at Hackbridge Primary School has become a hub of excitement and learning as Mister Mckenzie and Ryan introduce children to the art of skating. Most of these kids were putting on skates for the very first time when we started in September, with only a handful having any previous experience. But with a bit of guidance and encouragement, they now glide forward with confidence!

Building Confidence on Skates

From balancing to moving forward, every student has made impressive strides since the lessons began. For many, it started with a few wobbly steps, but today, their progress is undeniable. The journey from a beginner skater has been amazing, and we're incredibly proud of their commitment and enthusiasm. Now that they’ve mastered the basics, we’re introducing more complex skills to take their skating to the next level in the upcoming lessons.

Prepping for Sessions and Fun Group Activities

Each lesson is meticulously planned to ensure every skater’s experience is safe, structured, and fun! The kids gather in the designated waiting area where they can grab a snack, use the restroom, or simply get excited for the lesson ahead.

Skating gear

Skates and protective gear are set up in registration order, ensuring a smooth start. Ryan is always on hand to help the children gear up, giving them the support they need before hitting the track.

Grouped by Skill Level

To make sure each child gets the right level of attention and challenge, we split the sessions by skill level. Beginners have their own instructor to help them focus on foundational skills, while the intermediate and advanced skaters can work on refining and building on their techniques in a separate group. This approach helps ensure that every child is supported and given the chance to grow at their own pace.

Skills, Slope Training, and Jump Sessions

One highlight has been teaching the kids to tackle mini slopes confidently. Our “jump sessions” are a favourite too, helping students safely explore fun tricks and gain confidence in their movements. It’s not just about technique; it’s about feeling comfortable and in control on skates. By building a mix of balance, coordination, and control, we’re equipping these young skaters with skills that will serve them long after these sessions end.

Keeping It Fun with Wind-Down Games

After every lesson, we wind down with games that keep the fun going. A crowd favourite is “Chase the Instructor,” where kids get to team up and try to catch Ryan.

These moments remind us that learning is not only about improving but also about enjoying every step of the journey. The kids have a blast, and their joy fuels our enthusiasm as well!

Growing Independence and a Passion for Skating

More than half of our students are now so inspired that they’ve bought their own skates, practising whenever they can. It’s a testament to the hard work they’ve put in and the passion they’re developing for this fantastic sport. We can’t wait to see where they’ll go from here, and we’re excited to guide them along the way.
